How we support Pickering businesses
Pickering clients are looked after from our Vaughan office. Most requests are handled remotely, and visits are booked when hardware, cabling or a server needs hands on it. Highway 407 and Highway 401 both run through the city, so a site visit is a planned trip rather than a cross-country one.
A managed agreement covers the helpdesk, monitoring and patching, Microsoft 365, restore-tested backups and security on every managed device, for a monthly fee scoped to your users and devices. The helpdesk is staffed 24/7, and urgent incidents go to the 24/7 incident line, (289) 582-9930.
Where Pickering businesses are, and what that means for IT
Almost all commercial activity sits in the south: the downtown around Pickering GO and Pickering Town Centre, the Brock Road corridor, and the industrial area toward the lakeshore. Those are conventional office and industrial sites with normal business internet options.
North of Highway 407 the city is largely rural: Claremont, Brougham, Whitevale and Greenwood, with the Seaton lands in between and much of the area in the Greenbelt and Rouge National Urban Park. Businesses there, from contractors to professional practices in converted properties, have a completely different connectivity story.
Multi-site Durham businesses run on one agreement. We cover Ajax, Whitby and Oshawa along the 401, and Scarborough and Markham to the west.
Rural addresses north of Highway 407
What reaches a rural Pickering address varies road by road. The answer a provider gives for a postal code is not the answer for a driveway, so check before you sign a lease or buy equipment.
Fixed wireless, cable where it has been extended, and satellite services including Starlink are all possible depending on tree cover and line of sight. A business-grade circuit can take months, not weeks, to install.
Where the connection is the constraint, we change the design rather than oversell it:
- cellular failover so one fault does not stop the day
- local caching so large files are not pulled across a thin link again and again
- network equipment we can restart remotely, so a stuck router does not need a site visit
- cloud tools picked for how they behave on a poor connection
Energy, engineering and industrial suppliers
Ontario Power Generation's Pickering Nuclear Generating Station is the city's best-known employer, and a supplier and engineering network has grown around it. Manufacturers and industrial suppliers fill the employment lands near the 401.
Small firms in that supply chain get asked large-company questions in writing: MFA, patch cadence, backup testing, incident response and how subcontractors get access. We build the controls and the evidence that backs the answers: policies that match the systems, retained logs, dated restore tests and access reviews that happened.
The Cyber Centre's baseline controls for small and medium organizations are a sensible target, and they line up with most supplier questionnaires we see.
Planning for growth around Seaton
Seaton is the largest planned expansion in the city and it has built out slowly. For a business deciding where to lease and how much to invest in a building, the wrong lease assumption and the wrong IT assumption are often the same mistake.
The practical answer is to avoid IT decisions that are expensive to reverse. Keep identity, email and files in the cloud rather than tied to one building, choose internet contracts you can exit, and treat on-site servers as equipment with a known end date. Then a move, a second site or a jump in headcount is a configuration change rather than a rebuild.
The first 30 days with us
Week 1: see what is there
Inventory of accounts, devices, licences, domains and admin logins. We find out who holds the keys today.
Week 2: close the common routes in
MFA on every Microsoft 365 account, SPF, DKIM and DMARC on your email domain, and old accounts disabled.
Week 3: prove recovery
Backups confirmed for everything that is not already in the cloud, and a restore tested and dated.
Week 4: write it down
Network diagram, account list and a short risk list in plain English, ranked by what to fix next.
Email spoofing is common, and easy to check
In our August 2026 study of 481 GTA business domains, only 20.6% enforced DMARC, and the earlier July 2026 pilot (118 GTA domains) found only 40% fully protected against spoofing. Invoice fraud from a look-alike or spoofed domain is the attack we see most often against Durham trades and suppliers.
You can test your own domain with the email spoof check. For a case where this was fixed end to end, see our DMARC enforcement for a Mississauga developer.
Not sure what to fix first? The IT risk self-check walks you through your setup in a few minutes, on screen or on paper.
Managed IT services Pickering businesses get from us
A managed agreement for a Pickering business is scoped per month to users, devices and sites, and the scope document lists each service. It covers the helpdesk your staff contact directly, monitoring and patching of PCs, servers and network equipment, Microsoft 365 administration, backups restored on a schedule, endpoint protection and MFA on every account, and firewall management.
It also covers the dull work that keeps a small firm out of trouble: closing accounts when people leave, keeping a current list of devices and warranties, and renewing domains and certificates before they lapse. Projects, such as a move to a new unit or a server replacement, are quoted separately.
Security questionnaires from larger customers
Engineering firms, fabricators and service companies that sell into large organizations increasingly receive a security questionnaire with the contract. It usually asks about MFA, patching, backups, encryption, incident response and who has admin access, and it often asks for evidence rather than a yes.
We fill the gaps first and then keep the evidence current: patch reports, dated restore tests, an access review and a written incident plan. Our guide to answering a vendor security questionnaire explains what reviewers look for. The Cyber Centre's baseline controls are a sensible target, since many buyers model their questions on something similar.
Backup and disaster recovery
The test of a backup is a restore. We schedule one for every client, record the date, and report it monthly. A good setup keeps a local copy for quick recovery, an off-site copy the main network cannot change, and a separate backup of Microsoft 365 data.
For a firm on a rural line north of Highway 407, the off-site copy needs more planning: an initial upload can take days on a slow connection, and a full restore over the same line can take longer than the business can wait. In those cases we keep a local copy on separate hardware and seed the off-site copy deliberately, so the recovery time is known in advance rather than discovered during an outage.
Microsoft 365, Azure and cloud services
Most Pickering offices run on Microsoft 365 already. The work is usually tightening it: MFA everywhere with legacy sign-in blocked, sharing settings reviewed, shared mailboxes given owners, and laptops enrolled in Intune so they are encrypted and can be wiped if lost. Microsoft's security defaults are the floor, not the finish.
A move off an old file server to SharePoint or Azure is worth it when the internet line can carry it and the software supports it. Where it cannot, we keep the server and manage it properly. The pharma identity and device case study shows how a 40 to 50 person firm was scoped for centralized Entra ID and Intune management.
Choosing an IT company
Ask any provider who will own the admin accounts, how the backup is tested, what reply commitment goes in writing, and how you would leave. Ask whether on-site visits are included or billed, and how far they travel. An honest answer to the last question is worth more than a promise to be everywhere in minutes.
We do not have a Pickering office. We support Pickering from Vaughan, mostly remotely, with visits booked when hardware needs hands on it, and we cover Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa and Scarborough the same way.
IT planning for a growing firm
A planning review, usually quarterly, looks at what is getting old, what renews next, and what the business intends to do in the next year. A firm planning to add staff, open a second unit or bid for a contract with security requirements needs that conversation before the spending, not after.
For smaller firms the output is a one-page list with dates and rough priorities. For larger ones it becomes a written roadmap through our vCIO service.
Pickering questions
Yes, with a design that assumes the link will be slow or drop: failover, caching and remotely manageable equipment. We will tell you plainly what the connection can and cannot carry.
No. The monthly figure depends on users, devices, sites and security level. Use our IT quote checker to compare proposals.
We move admin access to accounts you own first and remove the old provider's access last, so nothing is lost. Our switching guide has the full order.
