Protection for your Microsoft 365 and Azure environments: identity, devices, data and configuration, set up properly and kept that way.

What is cloud security?
Cloud security is the work of setting up and maintaining the security of the cloud platforms your business runs on, so sign-ins, email, files and admin access are protected by design. For most GTA businesses we work with, that means Microsoft 365 and Azure.
A Microsoft 365 tenant is not secure by default. Microsoft supplies the controls, but many of them have to be switched on and tuned for the way your business works.
The Microsoft 365 and Azure checklist we work through
Each line is a setting we review, change and record. The links go to Microsoft's own documentation.
- Conditional Access: policies that decide what each sign-in may do based on user, device and location, with legacy authentication blocked.
- MFA methods: number matching for app approvals, and phishing-resistant authentication strengths required for administrators.
- Admin role separation: few Global Administrators, separate admin accounts, narrower roles for daily tasks and a documented break-glass account.
- External sharing: SharePoint and OneDrive sharing set deliberately, with guest access reviewed and expired.
- Email protection: anti-phishing impersonation policies, Safe Links where licensed, and DMARC moved to enforcement.
- Defender alerts: who receives them, and what happens to a risky sign-in or a new mailbox forwarding rule.
- Backup of Microsoft 365 data: mailboxes, OneDrive, SharePoint and Teams copied outside the production tenant and test-restored.
- Secure Score: reviewed as a to-do list, not as a target number.
Microsoft 365 and Azure security baseline: conditional access, MFA and admin roles
Most cloud incidents we are called to start with an identity, not a server: a password reused from another site, a mailbox signed into from abroad, a forwarding rule nobody noticed. The baseline closes those doors first. Multi-factor authentication is enforced on every account, including executives, shared mailboxes that allow sign-in, and service accounts. Legacy authentication protocols that cannot do MFA are blocked. Conditional access policies decide what each sign-in is allowed to do based on the user, the device and the location, so an unmanaged laptop or an unexpected country is challenged or refused rather than waved through.
Administrative roles get the same discipline. Global administrator is held by as few named accounts as practical, separate from the everyday mailbox each person uses, with break-glass access documented and monitored. Day-to-day tasks use narrower roles. External sharing in SharePoint, OneDrive and Teams is set deliberately, and audit logging is confirmed on so there is evidence to read if something does go wrong. The same tenant settings are what we manage month to month in our Microsoft 365 managed services.
Cloud backup and data protection
Moving to the cloud does not move the responsibility for your data. Microsoft keeps the service running and offers retention features, but deleted or encrypted content outside those windows is not something it restores for you. A separate backup of mailboxes, OneDrive, SharePoint and Teams, held outside the production tenant and checked with real test restores, is what makes recovery from ransomware, a malicious deletion or a departing employee a routine job.
Data protection also means controlling where data can go: sensitivity of shared links, which devices can download files, and how guests are reviewed and removed. Where the cloud sits alongside on-premises servers, the plan for both is covered by our backup and disaster recovery services.
How cloud security services are scoped
Scope follows what you run: the number of users and devices, how many Microsoft 365 tenants or Azure subscriptions are involved, whether there are on-premises servers or line-of-business applications in the mix, and any contractual, insurance or privacy obligations the controls need to evidence. A review of the current tenant comes first, because the gap list it produces decides the work.
Ongoing cloud security is usually part of a monthly agreement alongside helpdesk, monitoring and backup, described on our managed IT plans page. One-off projects are scoped and quoted in writing before work starts, so there are no open-ended invoices.
Cloud security for GTA businesses, from our Vaughan office
IT Rapid Support works from 7810 Keele St in Vaughan with businesses across Toronto, York Region, Peel and the rest of the GTA. Microsoft 365 and Azure security is administered remotely, which is why location matters less for the cloud work than for the devices and networks that connect to it, and on-site work for firewalls, workstations or office networks is arranged when it is needed.
Cloud security is one layer of the wider IT security services in Toronto we provide as managed security, which add monitoring, endpoint protection and incident response across the whole environment, and businesses near our office can read how we deliver cybersecurity in Vaughan. Call (289) 582-9930 to arrange a review of your tenant.
What this looked like for one client
A GTA fire protection and security company asked us to clean up its Microsoft 365 tenant. We audited every group, fixed mail routing and reduced one 82,456-item mailbox by 62%. The Microsoft 365 cleanup case study explains the steps.
Another client, a development company in Mississauga, moved from monitor-only DMARC to full enforcement with us. That one is in the email security case study.
Plans, onboarding and compliance
Onboarding steps, what a managed agreement covers and the privacy frameworks we help with are set out once on our managed IT plans page. Work outside an agreement is scoped and quoted in writing first.
Cloud security: common questions
Cloud security is the protection of data, identities, and applications that live in cloud platforms rather than on hardware in your office. For most Canadian businesses that means securing Microsoft 365 and Azure: who can sign in, what they can reach, how data is shared outside the organization, and how sign-in activity is monitored.
No. Microsoft 365 provides the security controls but does not switch all of them on for you. Default tenants commonly ship without enforced multi-factor authentication, without conditional access rules, with broad external sharing enabled, and with limited audit logging. Those settings have to be configured deliberately for the tenant to be considered secured.
Microsoft operates the platform and protects its own infrastructure, but that is not the same as backing up your content. Retention windows for deleted mail, files, and sites are limited, and data removed outside those windows is not recoverable from Microsoft. A separate backup is what makes point-in-time recovery possible.
Work centres on Microsoft 365 and Azure, which is what most Toronto and GTA businesses run. That covers identity and access management, conditional access, email security, data protection and sharing controls, and monitoring of sign-in and administrative activity across the tenant.
Remote workers are secured at the identity and device layer rather than at the office network. That means enforced multi-factor authentication, conditional access rules that evaluate the device and location of each sign-in, endpoint protection on the machines themselves, and monitoring that flags sign-in activity that does not fit the user.
For a Microsoft 365 and Azure business: a security baseline (enforced multi-factor authentication, conditional access, limited and separated admin roles, external sharing rules, audit logging), email protection and authentication, device and endpoint controls for the machines that sign in, a separate backup of cloud data with tested restores, and ongoing monitoring of sign-in and administrative activity so the settings stay in place after they are applied.
Cloud security is the part of IT security that covers cloud platforms, identities and data. IT security services as a whole also cover the office network and firewall, endpoints, backups of on-premises systems, and incident response. For most Toronto and GTA businesses the two overlap heavily, because email, files and sign-ins already live in Microsoft 365. Our managed security service covers the wider picture.
Yes. IT Rapid Support works with businesses across Toronto and the GTA from 7810 Keele St in Vaughan. Microsoft 365 and Azure security work is delivered remotely because the platforms are administered in the cloud, and on-site visits are available across the GTA for device and network work. Call (289) 582-9930.
Start with a review of the existing tenant: how identities are configured, which security controls are enabled, how data is shared externally, and what is being logged. The review produces a specific list of gaps rather than a generic checklist. Call (289) 582-9930 or use the contact form to arrange one.
