Managed Detection and Response (MDR) Services and Cybersecurity Monitoring

MDR services, short for managed detection and response, are a security service in which a team monitors your endpoints, servers, network and Microsoft 365 sign-ins, investigates suspicious activity and acts to contain it. IT Rapid Support delivers MDR remotely to businesses across Canada from Vaughan, Ontario, with on-site incident support across Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area.

What is managed detection and response (MDR)?

Managed Detection and Response is a service where an external team monitors your systems for attacks, investigates what the alerts actually mean, and acts to contain them. The difference from ordinary security tooling is the response: MDR includes people who investigate and intervene, not only software that raises an alert for someone else to read. IT Rapid Support runs MDR for businesses across Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area, and remotely for businesses elsewhere in Canada, which matters because intrusions are commonly timed for evenings and weekends. For businesses near our Keele Street office, MDR is part of how we deliver cybersecurity in Vaughan.

02

What security monitoring includes

Cybersecurity monitoring services are only as good as what they watch and what happens after an alert. Ours covers four sources: endpoints and servers, where endpoint detection and response watches behaviour rather than only known files; Microsoft 365 sign-ins and mailboxes, where an impossible-travel login or a new forwarding rule is often the first sign of a compromised account; the network, including traffic through the firewall; and the wider cloud environment.

When an alert fires, it is reviewed and escalated, and urgent incidents go to the 24/7 incident line. A person investigates what it means, and when a threat is confirmed it is contained: the device is isolated, the compromised account is disabled, and the spread is assessed. Recovery follows from clean, tested backups, and what happened is documented. The approach is aligned with the Detect and Respond functions of the NIST Cybersecurity Framework.

MDR is part of our Managed IT + Security plan, alongside enforced MFA, email authentication, security awareness training and a written incident response plan, so the team watching the alerts is the same team that can log in and fix the cause. For a plain-language walkthrough, see our guide to threat detection and monitoring.

MDR vs MSSP vs SIEM

The question that separates them in practice: when something is detected at night, does a person investigate and contain it, or do you get an email in the morning? Our article on MSP vs MSSP covers the provider side, and Toronto businesses can see how MDR fits with the rest of the stack on our cybersecurity services in Toronto page. If something is happening now, use our 24/7 cyber incident response line.

TermWhat it isWho acts on an alert
MDR
A service: monitoring, human investigation and containment of confirmed threats.
The MDR team investigates and responds.
MSSP
A type of provider that runs security services: firewalls, endpoint protection, email security, monitoring and incident response.
Depends on the contract; some only notify you.
SIEM
A tool that collects and correlates logs.
Someone still has to interpret and act on what it produces.

Cybersecurity monitoring services vs MDR

Many offers sold as cybersecurity monitoring services stop at the alert: a tool watches activity and sends a notification, and your own team decides what to do with it, usually the next morning. Managed detection and response starts from the same monitoring but carries it through. The alert is investigated by a person, a confirmed threat is contained, and the follow-up work of recovery and documentation is part of the service.

For a business without its own security staff, the gap between the two is the gap between knowing about an intrusion and stopping it. That is why we deliver threat monitoring as MDR rather than as a stand-alone alerting feed, and why the same team that watches the alerts can also fix the cause, as part of our managed security services.

What MDR looks like in one of our engagements

This is the sequence we agree in writing before the service starts. The details (who may isolate what, and who we phone) are set per client.

  1. Telemetry

Endpoint detection and response on laptops and servers, Microsoft 365 sign-in and audit logs, mailbox rule changes, and firewall logs where the device supports it.

  2. Triage

An alert is reviewed by our technician. Most are harmless and closed with a note. Ones that matter, such as a sign-in from an unexpected country followed by a new forwarding rule, are investigated.

  3. Containment

If the activity is confirmed and the agreement allows it, the device is isolated from the network or the account is disabled and its sessions revoked. Anything outside the agreed authority waits for your named contact.

  4. Telling you

Your named contact hears what was seen, what was done and what still needs a decision. Urgent incidents outside business hours go through the 24/7 incident line at (289) 582-9930.

  5. Cleanup and report

Credentials reset, cause removed, data restored from a clean backup if needed, and a written timeline of what happened and what changed.

How to compare MDR providers in Canada

Proposals for MDR services tend to look alike on paper. These questions separate them, and they are worth putting to every provider on your shortlist, including us:

The answers matter more than the product names in the proposal. Our MDR services guide covers the same questions in more depth for owners and office managers.

When an alert turns out to be a real intrusion, our cyber incident response services take over from containment to the written report.

  • Who reviews an alert that fires at 2 a.m. on a Sunday, and how quickly is it looked at?
  • What is the provider allowed to do without phoning you first: isolate a device, disable an account, block a sign-in?
  • Are Microsoft 365 sign-ins, mailbox rules and forwarding monitored, or only endpoints?
  • Is response included in the service, or is every incident billed as separate work?
  • What do you receive after an incident: a written account of what happened, what was touched and what was changed?
  • Where is the monitoring data stored and for how long, if data residency matters to your business or your insurer?
  • If something needs hands on hardware, can a technician be on site, and where?
07

What MDR will not do

No service catches everything. MDR shortens the time between an attacker getting in and someone acting on it; it does not replace MFA, patching or backups. If a provider promises to stop every attack, ask what they mean by it in writing.

If you need to establish what already happened, that is a forensic question. Our digital forensics service covers it, and the incident response sample report shows the kind of timeline we produce.

MDR services in Toronto and across Canada

Monitoring, investigation and containment are delivered remotely, so our MDR services cover businesses in Toronto, the Greater Toronto Area and elsewhere in Canada on the same basis. When an incident needs hands on hardware, on-site work is arranged from our office at 7810 Keele Street in Vaughan.

  • Toronto and GTA businesses: Remote monitoring and response, plus on-site incident support when a device has to be handled in person.
  • Businesses elsewhere in Canada: Managed detection and response delivered remotely to offices and distributed teams; hands-on needs are agreed during scoping.
  • Microsoft 365 included in scope: Sign-ins, mailbox rules and forwarding are watched alongside endpoints, because a compromised account is often the first step of an attack.

Plans, onboarding and compliance

Onboarding steps, what a managed agreement covers and the privacy frameworks we help with are set out once on our managed IT plans page. Work outside an agreement is scoped and quoted in writing first.

10

How exposed are you right now?

Monitoring is one of fifteen control areas in our IT risk self-check. It scores your posture across backups, MFA, endpoint protection, patching, admin accounts and more, then ranks what to fix first. No sign-up: it is a printable checklist and nothing is submitted.
