The security problems Aurora businesses actually face
Aurora's business base is a mix that does not show up in a single district. Professional offices, accounting and law practices, clinics and independent retailers sit along Yonge Street and around the Wellington Street intersection in the historic downtown. Engineering firms, manufacturers, distributors and service businesses work out of the business parks along Highway 404, near Wellington Street East and St. John's Sideroad. Aurora is also home to Magna International's head office, and a number of smaller companies in town work in or around automotive and industrial supply chains where larger customers set security requirements.
The incidents that reach those businesses are usually ordinary. A staff member signs in to a fake Microsoft 365 page from a shared-document email. A supplier's mailbox is compromised and sends an invoice with new banking details. A laptop that stopped patching months ago is the way in for ransomware. A former employee's account still works. Each has a known control, and running those controls continuously, rather than installing them once, is what this service is.
Microsoft 365 and email security
Stolen credentials are the most common way into a small business, so multi-factor authentication on every account comes first, including shared mailboxes, the owner's admin account and old service accounts. Around it the tenant is set up properly: legacy authentication blocked, conditional access, admin roles limited to the people who need them, external forwarding restricted, audit logging on, and mailbox rules monitored so a hidden forwarding rule is caught. Phishing is filtered before it reaches an inbox and external senders are flagged.
Email authentication is where most domains stop halfway. In our scan of 481 GTA business domains, published in the GTA SMB cybersecurity report 2026, 91.7% published SPF but only 20.6% enforced DMARC, which leaves the domain open to impersonation. We move to enforcement in stages so legitimate mail keeps flowing. The email spoofing check shows where your domain stands, and the Microsoft 365 security check covers the tenant settings.
Endpoints, networks and monitoring
Every managed workstation and server runs endpoint detection and response, which looks at behaviour rather than only known files and can isolate a machine that starts acting compromised. Patching is scheduled and reported, so a device that quietly stops updating is noticed. At the Managed IT + Security level, alerts from endpoints and Microsoft 365 sign-ins are investigated and acted on through our managed detection and response service. Intrusions are often timed for nights and weekends, when an Aurora office is empty.
In the business parks the network matters as much as the laptops. Office systems are separated from shop-floor and warehouse equipment, guest and visitor Wi-Fi is kept away from business systems, vendor remote-access tools sit behind multi-factor authentication, and firewalls are kept patched with their rules reviewed. Staff who work from home part of the week, or commute on the Barrie line from Aurora GO, connect through methods tied to their own identity that are removed the day they leave.
Backups and ransomware recovery
Prevention sometimes fails, and recovery decides how bad the week gets. Backups are monitored, kept as local and cloud copies with one copy separated from the production network, and restore-tested on a schedule, because a backup nobody has restored from is not a recovery plan. Microsoft 365 mail, OneDrive and SharePoint are backed up independently of Microsoft's own retention.
For businesses where downtime has a clear cost, such as a clinic that cannot open charts or a distributor that cannot ship, that extends into business continuity and disaster recovery planning with a written recovery order. Our guide to ransomware protection for Ontario businesses explains the layers in plain language.
Incident response, today or planned
Managed IT + Security clients have a written incident response plan: who is called first, who can isolate a device without waiting, who restores, and who speaks to staff, clients and the insurer. If something is happening now and you are not a client, our cyber incident response line is open 24/7 and new clients are welcome. Disconnect affected machines from the network, but do not wipe or rebuild them before speaking to someone, because that destroys evidence.
Where the question is what happened inside a mailbox, our digital forensics service preserves and documents the Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace records that still exist. For outages that are not security incidents, see our emergency IT services.
Supplier questionnaires, insurance and privacy
Aurora companies that sell into larger manufacturers, public-sector buyers or regulated clients are increasingly asked to prove their controls in writing: MFA coverage, endpoint detection, patch cadence, backup testing, incident response and how subcontractors get access. Insurers ask the same questions at renewal, and clinics and professional practices hold records covered by PHIPA or PIPEDA. Because the controls run continuously under the agreement, the answers are accurate and we can produce the evidence.
The cyber insurance readiness score and the cyber insurance readiness checklist show what is usually asked. We support the technical side of compliance; we do not certify that a business is compliant, and the obligation stays with your organization.
Security inside managed IT for Aurora
Security is part of a monthly managed IT fee rather than a separate contract, because a second vendor watching alerts on systems it cannot log in to fix adds a hand-off, not protection. The helpdesk, monitoring, patching and Microsoft 365 administration described on our managed IT services in Aurora page are run by the same people as the controls above. Plan levels are on the managed IT plans page; Managed IT + Security adds threat detection and response, enforced MFA, email authentication, awareness training and incident response. Security reviews or projects for businesses not on an agreement are scoped and quoted in writing before any work starts.
We do not have an Aurora office. Our office is in Vaughan, also in York Region, and most security work is remote by nature; technicians come up Highway 404 or Yonge Street when hands are needed. The same team covers Newmarket, Richmond Hill and King City, and our page on cybersecurity across York Region covers the wider area.
